It's not news that Boston 2024, the group trying to bring the Olympic to the city that year, has been lying to everyone. That’s business-as-usual for the group of political hacks and wealthy Boston elites. What’s newsworthy, and frankly just really nice to see, is that they’ve finally had some of their biggest lies exposed by Boston magazine.
Boston magazine published Boston 2024's full bid book, obtained from UMass through a public records request, which shows that the group wooed the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and secured the city's chance to host the games with the promise to use public funds to build venues and acquire land. Boston 2024 has repeatedly claimed that no taxpayer funds would be used for the games except on security, but the bid book has exposed that assertion for the farce that everyone who paid attention (and wasn’t on Boston 2024’s extensive payroll) said it was.
“Boston 2024 and Mayor Marty Walsh have repeatedly said that there would be no public funding used for Games venues. The recently released bid documents show that this has been a bald-faced lie,” said Jonathan Cohn, a member of the group No Boston 2024. “We are now learning about parts of the bid that the Mayor and Boston 2024 have shielded from the public--parts of the bid that show clearly how the public purse will be drained for this private land grab. For Bostonians who value honesty and transparency, the behavior of Boston 2024 and Mayor Walsh so far should simply be a deal-breaker.”
Boston 2024 initially refused to release any information about the bid book at all. They later released an edited version of the bid book which had all of these damning details scrubbed to prevent the public from knowing the truth, claiming that they didn't want to release “proprietary information” that could put them at a “competitive disadvantage.” Boston 2024 repeated this claim to Boston magazine after the bid book was released. (How stupid do they think we are?)
Since the release of the bid book, One-Term Walsh (keep your fingers crossed) has continued to insist that no taxpayer funds will be used. “That might be in the proposal, but that's not happening. I mean, I've made it perfectly clear that it will not be the case here in the city of Boston,” he told WCVB.
And yet, Walsh himself signed the bid book and helped Boston 2024 pitch the bid to the USOC in December, so he should have known all along that the group fully intended to use public money from the beginning.
Walsh stood by Boston 2024 as they lied to the public over and over again. Then again, perhaps Walsh never read the bid book. His office told us that he was never in possession of a copy of it and refused to say whether he had read it after we made a public records request to his office earlier this year.
It's time for the USOC to do the right thing and put Boston 2024 out of our misery. The only Olympic sport Boston needs is tossing these bums into Boston Harbor.
