Massachusetts and many other states designate today as holiday in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr, one of the the amazing leaders of the 1960s Civil Rights movement. Lowell named a street after him. Martin Luther King Jr. Way is in downtown, and Lowell's premiere venue, the Tsongas Arena, is built on it.
On January 4, Donald Trump and the Lowell Police Department attempted to set Guinness world record for irony.
With almost ten thousand people expected to attended a Donald Trump campaign visit, the Lowell police prepared for protesters. They designated a “Free Speech” area and roped it off... with crime scene tape. The irony only deepens when you realize that the designated thought crime area was directly adjacent to Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Yes that's right, Trump's racist and Islamaphobic message was spread at the 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way venue where protesting was not allowed. The Lowell police even called in the regional SWAT team, NEMLEC (Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council), to help make sure that no free speech went unpunished outside of the designated thought crime area. NEMLEC was the most appropriate choice for this given that they cite the threat of the 1960s civil rights movement as one of the reasons they formed.
We're waiting to hear back from Guinness if this event managed to be the most ironic thing ever. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day America.
